NSA Verifies: Binance Executive Escapes Custody

In a recent development, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has officially confirmed the escape of Nadeem Anjarwalla, a detained executive of Binance, from custody.

ONSA, in a statement on Monday, disclosed that Anjarwalla, who was under scrutiny in the investigation concerning Binance’s activities, managed to flee on Friday.

Earlier reports from PUNCH Online, citing Premium Times, had already highlighted Anjarwalla’s escape from custody on the same day.

Confirming the incident, Zakari Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at ONSA, stated that initial investigations indicated Anjarwalla had left Nigeria using an illicitly obtained passport.

Mijinyawa emphasized ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend the fugitive, stating, “Security agencies are collaborating with Interpol to secure an international arrest warrant for the suspect.”

Furthermore, Mijinyawa noted that individuals responsible for Anjarwalla’s custody have been detained, with investigations underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his escape.

The statement reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment to combating money laundering and terrorism financing, underscoring the ongoing investigation into transactions linked to Binance.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, holding British and Kenyan nationalities and serving as Binance’s Africa regional manager, had been facing trial in Nigerian courts until his escape. He absconded while under a 14-day remand order, scheduled for a court appearance on April 4, 2024.

ONSA urged both Nigerians and the international community to provide any pertinent information aiding in Anjarwalla’s arrest.

This disclosure follows previous reports from Financial Times, documenting the arrest and detention of two Binance executives upon their arrival in Nigeria amidst a website ban. Additionally, on March 12, 2024, the FT reported that the EFCC demanded data from Binance regarding its top 100 Nigerian users and six months’ worth of transaction history, a request currently under negotiation between the company and Nigerian authorities.
