Renowned Nigerian dancer and choreographer, Kafayat Shafau, popularly known as Kaffy, reveals the personal toll her profession has taken, including the loss of friendships.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, Kaffy opened up about the challenges she faced pursuing a career in dance, an industry that lacked recognition and commercial viability at the time.
“Diving into a career without predefined gender roles was already daunting,” Kaffy shared. “Dancers were only celebrated during specific events like performances for the National Troupe or prestigious invitations from governors. It wasn’t an easy path, and I paid the price by losing connections with friends and acquaintances. I felt isolated.”
Kaffy recounted instances where even initial supporters withdrew their backing due to a lack of understanding or vision for her chosen path.
“People couldn’t see the potential in dance as a profession,” she explained. “It was disheartening to witness the shift in support from those who once stood by me.”
Reflecting on gender biases in the entertainment industry, Kaffy highlighted the pervasive perception of women as mere objects of desire.
“As a woman in this industry, proving one’s worth beyond superficial expectations is a constant battle,” she remarked. “I faced skepticism and patronizing attitudes from music directors, editors, and other stakeholders who questioned my contributions. But my education and determination empowered me to assert myself and earn the respect I deserved.”
Despite the challenges, Kaffy acknowledged the unexpected sources of encouragement she found along her journey.
“It’s ironic that I received more support from men than women,” she admitted. “Initially met with resistance, I gradually earned admiration from male counterparts who recognized my dedication and talent.”
Kaffy’s story serves as a testament to the resilience required to pursue unconventional paths and the sacrifices often made along the way. Through her perseverance, she not only defied societal norms but also paved the way for future generations of dancers to follow their passions unapologetically.
