Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” Shines on Streaming, Boosting Another Hit: The “Boy Is Mine”
Pop sensation Ariana Grande gears up for a remarkable week on the Billboard charts, eyeing her sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with “Eternal Sunshine.” Additionally, her latest single, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” is poised for an impressive debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Eternal Sunshine” experienced a surge in streaming figures on Monday, March 11th, after its release the preceding Friday, bouncing back from a slight weekend dip. According to Luminate, the album garnered 29.32 million official U.S. on-demand streams on Monday, marking a 17% increase from the previous day. The momentum was fueled in part by “We Can’t Be Friends,” Grande’s endeavor to propel it to the summit of the Hot 100, following the January debut of the lead single, “Yes, And?”
In a noteworthy twist, Grande’s homage to Brandy and Monica’s 1998 R&B classic, “The Boy Is Mine,” is not only making waves for her but also rejuvenating interest in the original track. Grande has expressed her desire to reimagine the iconic Brandy-Monica duet, and now, her rendition is catalyzing a streaming resurgence for its predecessor.
From March 8th to 10th, “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy and Monica witnessed a spike in streams, accumulating 587,000 plays—an 18% increase from the previous week’s Friday-to-Sunday tracking period, as reported by Luminate. While Grande’s interpretation of “The Boy Is Mine” enjoys significantly more streams, amassing 8.3 million during the same timeframe, it’s evident that the allure of the original still captivates a new generation of rhythmic pop enthusiasts.
